Sometimes when a family is trying to regroup in trying times, parents have some difficult decisions to make. In other cases, the kids pretend to be giant birds hatching their siblings. Looks like the latest round of “Atypical” has a little bit of both.
Netflix offered up an early look at Season 2, which premieres early next month. Set in the wake of some major changes in the Gardner family’s natural environment, Sam (Keir Gilchrist) is struggling to adapt to some shifts in his high school friend group. Elsa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is still trying to earn back the trust of her husband Doug (Michael Rappaport) after having an affair. Meanwhile, Sam’s therapist Julia (Amy Okuda) is still working through last season’s surprise pregnancy while helping her patients get back on track.
Season 1 regulars Nik Dodani and Jenna Boyd return for this new batch of episodes, alongside new cast member Casey Wilson, who’s playing a Newton High School employee helping Sam decide his future.
IndieWire’s Ben Travers was a little lukewarm on the show’s first season, but pointed out that Gilchrist’s performance held the series together, writing, “Sam’s through-line is solid, and his supporting players offer more pleasant surprises than frustrating distractions. If this is what gets the Keep Kids Weird message across, so be it. If not, it’s still worth the effort.”
