Gaspar Noé was bracing for controversy when he brought his new film “Cimax” to the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, but the title ended up being one of the event’s most universally-beloved movies. Noé’s first directorial effort since “Love,” “Climax” stars Sofia Boutella as the leader of a dance troupe who find themselves plunged into chaos after a late night dance party.
The official synopsis from distributor A24 reads: “The troupe begins an all-night celebration that turns nightmarish as the dancers discover they’ve been pounding cups of sangria laced with potent LSD. Tracking their journey from jubilation to chaos and full-fledged anarchy, Noé observes crushes, rivalries, and violence amid a collective psychedelic meltdown.”
Starring opposite Sofia Boutella is a cast of professional dancers. The movie won the Art Cinema Award at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. IndieWire’s Eric Kohn gave “Climax” an A- review, calling it the best film of the director’s career so far.
A24 is set to release “Climax” sometime this fall. Watch the first trailer below.
