Oscar season is coming to its end this weekend with the 92nd Academy Awards, which is set to come to a nail-biting ending between frontrunners “1917” and “Parasite” for Best Picture. “1917” is the second-most nominated film of the year with 10 Academy Award nominations, tied with Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Todd Phillips’ “Joker” is the most nominated movie of the year with 11 nominations, including Best Picture. Scorsese, Tarantino, and Phillips are joined by Bong Joon Ho and Sam Mendes in the Best Director. After winning the Director’s Guild of America prize earlier this year, Mendes is the favorite to win the 2020 directing category. Oscar pundits are split between “Parasite” and “1917” for Best Picture. “1917” would appear to be a no-brainer after winning the PGA and BAFTA prizes for Best Film, but SAG winner “Parasite” has widespread industry passion in its favor.

As for the acting categories, all four races appear to be locked up: Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) for Best Actor, Renee Zellweger (“Judy”) for Best Actress, Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) for Best Supporting Actor, and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”) for Best Supporting Actress. All four actors have swept awards season, winning their respective categories at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild awards, the BAFTA Film awards, and the Critics Choice Awards.

Much of the attention around the 2020 Oscar nominations leading up to the announcement has centered on whether or not the Academy will embrace female filmmakers in this year’s Best Director lineup. Both the Golden Globes and the Directors Guild of America awards shut out women directors in favorite of five male nominees, leading to widespread industry backlash. The Oscars did the same, shutting out Greta Gerwig of “Little Women” despite the fact the film received several nominations,

Last year’s Oscar nominations were dominated by Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” (Netflix) and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favorite” (Fox Searchlight), both of which earned 10 nominations. “Roma” took home honors for Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Language Film, but it was controversially beat by Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book” (Universal) in the Best Picture race. Many film critics were outraged over the end result and named “Green Book” the worst Best Picture winner since “Crash” infamously won the Academy’s top prize over “Brokeback Mountain.”

The complete list of 2020 Oscar nominations is listed below. Winners for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced Sunday, February 9. The ceremony will air on ABC without a host. IndieWire will update the categories below as they are announced live.
