The 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards have come to an end, with Megan Mullally hosting a ceremony that should make Oscar predictions that much easier — actors who win big with SAG tend to do likewise with the Academy. That includes Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman, Sam Rockwell, and Allison Janney, all of whom went on to Oscar glory after taking home prizes at last year’s SAG Awards.
If we see a repeat of that this year, it’s good news for Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), and Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”), but the same can’t be said of Emily Blunt — though she won tonight for her role in “A Quiet Place,” she isn’t nominated for the Oscar. The evening’s top prize went to “Black Panther,” meaning that “A Star Is Born” was shut out.
As for the small screen, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” had as impressive a showing here as it did at the Golden Globes earlier this month: The acclaimed Amazon series swept the Comedy category, winning the Ensemble, Actress (Rachel Brosnahan), and Supporting Actor (Tony Shalhoub) prizes. On the more dramatic side of things, Jason Bateman and Sandra Oh took home prizes for “Ozark” and “Killing Eve,” respectively, with the Ensemble award going to “This Is Us.”
