Gary Oldman Wins Oscar for Best Actor for ‘Darkest Hour’

Every dog will have his day, including The British Bulldog. Gary Oldman snagged the Best Actor Oscar for portraying famed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday night.

It was a win that surprised no one. In Oldman’s rousing turn as Churchill, he has delivered some of the best speeches of his career, and it’s paid off with awards from the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, the BAFTAs, and now the Academy, among others. That’s one crowded mantel.

The only other real name seen as a contender was Timothée Chalamet. The 22-year-old made a splash as the artlessly mesmerizing Elio, caught in the throes of his first and possibly most unforgettable love in Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name.”

Besides Chalamet, the other contenders in the Best Actor category included Daniel Day-Lewis in his swan song before retirement, playing a persnickety couturier in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread”; Daniel Kaluuya as an unsuspecting boyfriend in Jordan Peele’s satiric horror “Get Out”; and Denzel Washington, back from last year’s nomination for “Fences,” but this time as the title lawyer and activist “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”
