Glenn Weiss, the director of the 90th Academy Awards, won the Emmy for outstanding direction of a variety special, and he used his brief time at the podium accepting his award to propose to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. “You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend, because I want to call you my wife,” Weiss said, as the crowd in attendance at the Emmys got up on their feet in roaring applause.
Weiss has won 14 Emmy awards, and now has back-to-back trophies for directing the Academy Awards. He won in 2017 for directing the 89th Academy Awards. The director has also won Emmys for filming awards ceremonies such as the Tony Awards. Weiss was favored to win given his amazing Emmys track record, so he probably knew he had a shot at executing one of the best marriage proposals in recent television history.
The Emmys proposal quickly went viral on social media, most notably for the shocked reactions from Weiss’ fiancée and the celebrities in the room. Leslie Jones could be seen standing on her feet as Weiss called his girlfriend up to the stage and got down on one knee. For an otherwise straightforward awards show, the marriage proposal provided a jolt of energy.
OMG, that proposal went better than the Spider-Man video game one. Can’t wait for him to come backstage. 😭💍💞 #Emmys pic.twitter.com/EfYfVXgd1U
