Seventy-Five Songs Qualify Oscar Contention; Frontrunners

Original Oscar songs are always a strange amalgam of pop songs crafted for credit sequences and organic original songs that help to tell a film’s story. Animated musicals tend to do well, natch, so “Frozen”‘s tour-de-force set piece “Let It Go” is looking like a favorite to wind up in the final five to be announced on Oscar nominations morning, January 16. “Shine Your Way” from “The Croods” and Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2” are also strong contenders.

Seventy-five songs from eligible feature-length 2013 motion pictures will contend for nominations in the Original Song category for the 86th Oscars.

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film.  A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.
