Armando Iannucci to Leave ‘Veep’ After Season 4
“Veep” Season 4 has yet to begin, but now it already feels like an ending. The Hollywood Reporter released a story stating this year will be the last for series creator Armando Iannucci, who is stepping aside to spend more time with his family — who lives in London — and work on other projects.
“We have had conversations with Armando for some time about the challenges of maintaining his family life in London and producing a show in the states,” an HBO rep said in a statement to THR. “Armando is not replaceable but we are confident that ‘Veep’ will continue to be produced at the highest levels with new show runner, David Mandel. David has worked with HBO for many years as executive producer, writer and director for ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.'”
Iannucci’s departure may seem like a surprise to many fans, but the writer and producer has been hinting at an exit for years. In an interview this April, Iannucci said, “I’m itching to do something cinematic again,” and he’s told others of plans for a comedy about the death of Stalin. Iannucci also said he wants the show to continue without him, which helps to explain the hiring of a new showrunner rather than ending the series altogether.
Mandel has not only worked with HBO before, but also “Veep” lead Julia Louis-Dreyfus. He spent three years on “Seinfeld” as a producer and writer before working on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and co-writing the scripts for “The Dictator” (with Sacha Baron Cohen) and “Clear History” (with Larry David). Undoubtedly his series work should provide more hope for “Veep” fans than his features.
Though Season 5 has yet to be given the official green light at HBO, hiring a showrunner for next year seems like a strong indication of its existence. HBO won’t want to let go of its best shot at awards in the comedy category, as Louis-Dreyfus has already won three Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series Emmys for her role on “Veep.” The star’s familiarity with Mandel should help smooth any awkwardness in the upcoming transition.
“Veep” Season 4 premieres Sunday night at 10:30pm on HBO.
