Paul Schrader is still going strong at 71 years old. The legendary writer behind such classics as “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull” proved his directorial voice was still alive and thriving in 2016’s “Dog Eat Dog,” and now he’s back with even better thriller thanks to “First Reformed.” The film premiered to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival last year, where IndieWire’s Eric Kohn said it marked Scharder and star Ethan Hawke’s best work in years.
“First Reformed” stars Hawke as an ex-military chaplain who is still grieving over the death of his son. His faith is tested after a young woman (Amanda Seyfried) comes to him for counseling with her environmentalist husband.
A24 will release “First Reformed” in theaters May 18. Watch the trailer below.
