Let the race begin! The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) has officially kicked off the 2016-17 awards season with this morning’s nominations for the 26th Annual Gotham Awards, which will take place November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. While not the largest awards show of season, the Gothams are one of the most important platforms for indies looking to get a real jump start in the race. Just look at nominations for amazing films like “The Fits,” “Krisha” and “Love & Friendship” to see why the Gotham Awards are so essential.
This year, Kenneth Lonergan’s acclaimed drama “Manchester By The Sea” leads the pack with four nominations, including Best Actor for Casey Affleck and Best Picture, where it will be joined by “Certain Women,” “Everybody Wants Some!!,” “Moonlight” and “Paterson.” The latter two, which are some of the most acclaimed indies of the year, cleaned up nicely as well with multiple nominations. Adam Driver will be competing for Best Actor, while the entire cast of “Moonlight” will receive the Gotham Jury Award for Ensemble Performance.
In addition to the competitive awards, Gotham Award Tributes will be given to actors Amy Adams and Ethan Hawke, director Oliver Stone, and Industry Tribute recipient, producer Arnon Milchan. This year’s nomination jury included IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich, Eric Kohn and Liz Shannon Miller.
