It’s a Dog’s Life: FX Renews ‘Wilfred’ For a Third Season

“Wilfred,” FX’s dark comedy starring Elijah Wood as a depressed man who starts seeing his neighbor’s dog Wilfred (Jason Gann) as a pot-smoking man in a dog suit, will be getting a third season from the cable network.

Like seasons one and two, the third round of the series will run 13 episodes, with production beginning next spring for a June 2013 premiere.

The new season will see some shifts in the staff of the show — David Zuckerman, who adapted “Wilfred” for American TV from the original Australian show, will be stepping down as showrunner while remaining an executive producer. Writer/producers Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné will step up to take his place as the new showrunners, having also been elevated to executive producers.

According to Nick Grad, Executive Vice President of Original Programming for FX, “As John (Landgraf) said at the summer TCA, it was only a matter of time before we picked up the show, we just had to work some things out. David Zuckerman has done an amazing job adapting and reconceiving ‘Wilfred’ for FX. It was his decision to step down from the Showrunner’s post, but we’re very happy he is going to stay involved with the show. Both we and David have great faith in the ability of Reed and Eli to seamlessly step up and take over the reins. I have no doubt they’ll do a great job.”

Season two of “Wilfred” averaged 2.63 million total viewers.
