The drama is inspired by Nancy Milford’s bestselling biography “Zelda,” which the filmmakers optioned for the project. The story, based on a screenplay by Emma Frost, will chronicle Fitzgerald’s life, her marriage with author F. Scott Fitzgerald and explore Zelda’s desperate attempt to define herself through her own art. The film asks: Can love exist between creative equals?

Shearmur is producing with Brian Oliver, Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi. Oliver’s Cross Creek Pictures is also in talks to finance and produce the movie.

Zelda, dubbed the “first American flapper” by her husband, was best known as a wild child who loved attention. She had a tumultuous relationship with Fitzgerald but was his greatest muse. She was later diagnosed schizophrenia and used writing and painting as her creative outlets.

Lawrence can next be seen opposite Chris Pratt in “Passengers,” out December 21. She’s also set to star in Adam McKay’s Theranos medical drama, the untitled Darren Aronofsky film and Francis Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow.”
