This season of “Maron” veered far away from the comedian Marc Maron’s real life, sending the star of the show away from his life and friends and into serious rehab. Yet just one week before IFC is set to air the finale of the fourth season, the creator and star announced on his podcast “WTF With Marc Maron” that the critically acclaimed series would not be returning for a fifth.
“This is it,” said Maron. “It’s done. There’s ways to do more, but this is the vision. This season was the season. And I couldn’t be more thrilled about how it came out, how all four seasons came out. You’ll see how we wrap the story up in the best way possible, and I just feel like it’s done. I’m thrilled about it.”
The series stood as one of the network’s higher rated original shows, but Maron implies that even if they wanted more seasons, they would respect the star’s wishes.
“I imagine maybe IFC would want to do more,” said Maron. “I don’t know, they haven’t said anything to that end…but I don’t want to do it anymore. I’m sure they’d be thrilled to do more. It doesn’t cost a lot, we do it pretty inexpensively which adds to the challenge but we had brilliant people on the team of ‘Maron.’ I had great writers, great line producers, directors, lighting guys, set guys…IFC gave us a lot of creative freedom.”

He expressed reservations about continuing the show after its expiration date, fearing the program would become “garbage.”
“What’s the point of refilling if the stakes are so low?” said Maron. “You see the garbage on TV that’s the same jokes, the same stories, retread over and over again. Why not just sell out if you’re making bank? I’m not like that, I’m not a big money guy…but there’s no reason to become redundant. This season departed into something fantastic and disturbing.”
