George R.R. Martin is not resting on his laurels. Capitalizing on his considerable renown for “Game of Thrones,” the prolific author of the fantasy series that morphed into HBO’s mega-hit has penned a science-fiction horror series for Syfy. In this first look feature, Martin matter-of-factly describes “Nightflyers” as “A haunted house story on a starship. It’s ‘Psycho’ in space.” If “Nightflyers” is a fraction as epic, ambitious, and detailed as “Game of Thrones,” it definitely warrants checking out.
Per the official description: “‘Nightflyers’ follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer – a ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain – in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other – and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.”
The set and production design were extremely ambitious, with producer Sean Ryerson describing it as “Acres of spaceship.” “Nightflyers” stars Gretchen Mol and Brían F. O’Byrne, as well as a host of British television actors. Syfy has not announced a release date for “Nightflyers,” but the series will arrive sometime in the fall.
