From the festival that’s highlighted such strong talents as Cathy Yan (who’s helming DC’s upcoming Margot Robbie-starring Harley Quinn movie) and Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano (who have a third season of HBO’s “Animals” hitting in August), comes the next generation of talent.

The New York Television Festival (NYTVF) has unveiled its lineup for the 2018 Independent Pilot competition, including 45 world festival premieres and a number of well-reviewed entries from this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The 59 pilots come from a diverse group of creators from various international locations. A few highlights:

  • A record 72 percent of all selected pilots feature persons of color above the line, up from 56 percent in 2017
  • 70 percent of these pilots include a woman in a core creative role (creator, writer, director), including 53 percent with a female creator (up from 50 percent in 2017 and the largest number in the festival’s history);
  • 40 percent of Official Selections have a person of color on the core creative team

For the first time, the NYTVF is taking place across seven days in July, aligning its indie pilot and script competitions with the beginning of the industry’s next development season. At the 2017 festival, more than 600 development meetings were facilitated between invited artists and representatives from more than 75 networks, studios, digital platforms, agencies, production companies, and more, with several key deals and many critical connections made as a result.

“Some of the most compelling storytelling on TV is coming from writers and creators with a variety of backgrounds, and this has become a real inspiration point for the next generation of creators,” NYTVF founder and executive director Terence Gray said in a statement. “We are seeing this in full force in 2018, and the unique stories being brought forward by indie artists are a clear reaction to this important industry trend.”

“At its core, the Festival has always been about elevating the best new creative voices and introducing them to industry decision-makers. The fact that more than half of these projects don’t have representation, and three quarters are premiering at our Festival, aligns perfectly with our mission and the growing spotlight the industry is shining on independent television,” he added.

NYTVF 2018 runs from July 14 – 19. For more information, including industry passes and public ticket availability, visit the official website. Below, check out a playlist of all the trailers for this year’s independent pilot entries.
