READ MORE: Anne Thompson’s Take on the Spirit Awards Nominations
In recent years, the Independent Spirit Awards have been an easy target. The frontrunners are often too reflective of Oscar season to actually showcase independent film. But this year’s nominees — including the stop-motion “Anomalisa,” above — are something of an exception.
That’s the starting point for the latest episode of Screen Talk, in which co-hosts Anne Thompson and Eric Kohn discuss some of the welcome surprises from the Spirit nominations and contemplate their potential impact on Oscar season. They also touch on early buzz for “The Revenant” and reports of The Weinstein Company’s plans to scale back its film division. And as a special holiday season bonus, this week’s episode closes with the hosts discussing what they’re thankful for.
