Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ to Be Co-Financed by CBS Films and Entertainment One

Now that he’s won the Academy Award for Best Director, Guillermo del Toro has considerably more leeway to see his passion projects through to completion. The first of those is “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” an adaptation of the bestselling book series by Alvin Schwartz that del Toro will co-write and produce. “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” helmer André Øvredal is directing the project, which CBS Films and Entertainment One just announced they’ll be co-financing.

“’Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,’ led by the incomparable Guillermo del Toro, is such a chillingly fun ride that it’s sure to leave audiences around the world jumping in their seats,” said Steve Bertram, eOne’s President of Film, Television and Digital. “We’re thrilled to be joining Terry Press and her team at CBS Films, Guillermo, André Øvredal, and the talented group they’ve assembled, and look forward to launching in Cannes through our partners at Sierra/Affinity.”

Comprised of three horror-themed children’s books, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” was published between 1981 and 1991. It previously inspired a documentary featuring R.L. Stine and other authors.
