Showtime's la Carte Streaming Service Hits July

Showtime hopes to compete with HBO NOW by finally offering its own a la carte streaming app, simply called Showtime. Beginning this July, Showtime will make the app available on Roku for $10.99 in addition to hosting the app on PlayStation Vue, Sony’s cloud-based TV service, and on Apple TV. Showtime promises more partners to follow.

The service will launch on all three platforms on the same day ahead of the July 12 premieres of Showtime’s celebrated series “Ray Donovan” and “Masters of Sex.” Roku and Apple customers who sign up in July will have access to a 30-day free trial.

On top of offering live East Coast and West Coast feeds of new series, Showtime will also offer a library of movies, docs and sports programs on the app. Though HBO NOW plans to bring its service to Android customers this summer, Apple is currently its exclusive digital partner. Thus, Showtime wants to stand apart from HBO by making its on-demand service available elsewhere. Not to mention, Showtime will be $4 cheaper than HBO NOW.
