‘SNL’: Bill Hader Returns as Stefon, Cracking Up as He Jokes About ‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.’ and ‘Call Me by Your Name’ — Watch

New York’s hottest show is “Saturday Night Live.” It’s got everything: Bill Hader, “The Californians,” “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” references. The longtime “SNL” member returned to his old stomping ground last night, as did one of his most famous characters: Stefon, whose habit of appearing on “Weekend Update” to dish about the city’s utterly bizarre nightlife endeared him to many over the years. Watch that triumphant return — which also features references to “Call Me by Your Name,” “Moonlight,” and “La La Land” — below.

“If you’re drunk in midtown doing cheap coke off your laundry card, I have just the place for you,” he informs us. “New York’s hottest club is Gauche, Inspired by True Events. This former CVS — which became a Chase Bank, and then became a CVS again — has a familiar yet troubling feel, like when Larry King would play himself in a movie.”

It’s here that he starts uncontrollably laughing for the first of many times throughout the bit. “This place has everything: desk sets, key fobs, kale chips, ‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.” — a recurring theme at New York’s hottest club these days, it seems, as the drama starring Denzel Washington is present elsewhere as well.

At one point he’s interrupted by “Weekend Update” co-hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost, and so he decides to respond to them as “Moonlight” and “La La Land,” respectively. Upon being called Stefon by Jost, he has a simple request: “call me by your name.”
