While “Snowpiercer” didn’t do big numbers stateside, and was mostly a VOD play, internationally it was a different story. When the film opened in South Korea, it was a massive success, selling four million tickets in just one week, besting the previous records held by blockbusters like “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and “Iron Man 3.” Even more, Bong Joon-Ho‘s picture had an even higher per-day attendance in its second week of release, and this was partially due to 4% of audience members going back to see it again. The film wound up earning $82 million overseas, and it looks like the industry wants to tap into that success again.

THR reports that a TV series based on “Snowpiercer” is in the works. Josh Friedman (Steven Spielberg‘s “War of the Worlds” and James Cameron‘s “Avatar” sequels) will pen the script for the project that will count both Bong Joon-Ho and Park Chan-wook as executive producers (the latter was also an EP on the film). Naturally, exact story details aren’t in place, but the basic premise of a class system perpetuated on a train containing the Earth’s final survivors following a wintry apocalypse has a lot of potential to be explored further.

It’ll be interesting to see where this project lands, but it really seems like a cable or streaming play, rather than something on network television. Thoughts? Let us know below.
