On Monday night’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert resurrected the fan-favorite “Colbert Report” character, just in time to kick off the Republican National Convention. The real Colbert seemed flabbergasted and was unable to explain the success of Trump’s campaign, so he decided to track down his buddy, Jon Stewart, for some advice. He found the former “Daily Show” host living in isolation in the woods, and told him about the news that Trump is the nominee.

“Jon, listen, I know that you and your beard are very busy these days, but I’m here to tell you it’s the Republican National Convention this week,” he said to Stewart as explained the Trump situation.

Shocked by the news, Stewart replied, “The guy from ‘The Apprentice?’…The guy who filed for bankruptcy in 1991…and 2009?” Then behind Stewart the “Colbert”-version of Stephen appeared holding his signature Captain America shield, who upon hearing about Trump ran off.

In the next segment the faux-Colbert was brought into the studio by a gold chariot pulled by Uncle Sam. “Hello nation. Did you miss me? I know I did!” he stated. “Well, it’s time to say ‘Aloha’ to Stephen Colbert and ‘Aloha’ to Stephen Colbert.”

“Right now Americans are angry, confused and lashing out angrily – and that’s just the Republican nominee,” said the “Report” character. To try and make sense of it all he brought back his popular “The Word” segment which featured the word of the day: “Trumpiness.”

According to him, Trumpiness is like his famous neologism, “truthiness” but with one major difference, “Truthiness was from the gut, but Trumpiness clearly comes from much further down the gastrointestinal tract.”

All this happened right after his opening jazz musical number about the RNC called “Christmas in July.” The song-and-dance performance poked fun at the Republican convention and had Colbert run through a poster of Trump’s face. “This week, you and me, we will witness history as the RNC crowns their orange manatee! Well see wacky hats, crazy ties, worn by thousands of white guys and an entire airplane hangar filled with Donald Trump’s ex-wives,” he sang in the intro.
