We’re used to seeing Cate Blanchett in serious prestige dramas, but the Oscar-winning actress has been having a genre blast recently. Hot off her villainous turn in the Marvel tentpole “Thor: Ragnarok,” Blanchett has both the female-charged heist flick “Ocean’s Eight” and the fantasy horror film “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” dropping this year. The latter is the latest from Eli Roth, most recently in theaters last month with “Death Wish.”
“The House with a Clock in Its Walls” is based on the 1973 children’s book of the same name by author John Bellairs and illustrator Edward Gorey. “Daddy’s Home” child actor Owen Vaccaro plays a 10-year-old orphan who moves in with his uncle (Jack Black). The uncle’s home turns out to be alive, and thus begins an adventure that includes awakening the dead and teaming up with a witch next door (Blanchett).Universal Pictures will release “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” in theaters September 21.
