‘The Office’ Revival: John Krasinski ‘Would Totally Do It,’ But That Doesn’t Mean He’s Down for a Full New Season
At least one Dunder Mifflin alum is eager to get back behind his desk as part of the rumored “The Office” revival, but don’t count on him to show up for a full season. Original star John Krasinski (who will soon premiere his third feature film directorial effort, “A Quiet Place,” which opens next month) told IndieWire that he’s very much down for returning to the NBC series that made him a household name. He’s even got a clever way to do it, one that he hopes wouldn’t dent the show’s legacy for either hardcore fans or its own stars.
“It’s one of those things where I’m sure people don’t believe me when I say I would totally do it, because the truth is I would totally do it,” Krasinski said.
But that comes with a caveat: Mainly, when “The Office” wrapped up nearly five years ago after a nine-season run, it concluded in the perfect place. So how exactly could that be revived for further broadcast consumption?
“I don’t think anybody in our show sees that we didn’t end it the way we wanted to end it. We’re one of the very lucky shows that got to end when we wanted to, how we wanted to,” he said. “So I don’t know how it exciting it would be to do a run of the show, ’cause you don’t want to retread old things and have people not be as excited about it as they are now.”
Krasinski has figured out a way around that, though, one that doesn’t include a full new season of the show and could even nod directly at the UK series that initially inspired it. That show wrapped in 2002 after a two-season run, which it then followed with a two-episode Christmas special that arrived the following year, a cheery check-in with beloved characters that functioned as its own sort of revival.
“I think the UK thing that I always have pitched and wanted to do is that Christmas special thing, where we do a Christmas special this year and then two years from now, or three years from now, we do another one,” he said. “I love that idea coming back finding out where everybody is. I would totally be down for that.”
Still, Krasinski has no qualms about getting back into business with his paper-slinging compatriots, because he still looks back on the entire experience so fondly.
“I remember talking to other people on TV shows and they were like, ‘Fifth season, right? That’s when you all started hating each other?’ and I was like, ‘No, was that when you started hating each other?’ and they were like, ‘Hell yeah, fifth season and I was like nope,‘” Krasinski said. “Right until the end, we were a family, we were emotionally connected, we all cried our eyes out on the last day. Yeah, we were all moving on to other things, but not because we wanted to get off the show. It was sort of a magical existence.”
