“The Shape of Water” is set in Baltimore, but most of Guillermo del Toro’s newly crowned Best Picture winner was filmed in Toronto. To celebrate that victory, our friends to the north decided to update the Welcome to Toronto sign with a postscript: “We Made That Fish Sex Movie!”
Among the Canadian craftsmen who worked on the film were production designers Paul Austerberry, Jeffrey A. Melvin, and Shane Vieau, who won an Academy Award for their efforts; “The Shape of Water” was also honored with Best Director for del Toro and Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat.
The new motto appears to be Photoshopped and has likely not been sanctioned by Toronto officials, but that could change when they see how warmly received the update is.
