Watch: 2 Deleted Scenes From ‘The Great Gatsby’; F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Last Tycoon’ Headed To HBO

It might seem like it was ages ago, but it’s only been a few months since Baz Luhrmann‘s 3D, glitter encrusted “The Great Gatsby” did the Charleston in theaters across the country. While reviews may have been mixed and the final result certainly spotty (we discussed The 5 Most Ridiculous Things About ‘The Great Gatsby’), audiences seemed to love it, with the final tally north of $340 million worldwide. Not bad at all. If you needed a little more Fitzgerald in your life, some good news is on the horizon.

First up, we have two deleted scenes from the movie, recently dropped by Warner Bros. as the movie hits DVD and Blu-ray overseas. You might have seen them on the domestic release, but if not, the first finds Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Jordan Baker (the excellent Elizabeth Debicki) sharing a moment, while the second centers on the ponderous Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) himself. But if it this isn’t enough, and tales of the well-off and disenchanted is your cup of tea, there’s more coming.

Deadline reports that Billy Ray (“Breach,” “Captain Phillips“) has just inked a deal to write and direct a new series based on Fitzgerald’s unfinished novel “The Last Tycoon.” Intriguingly, the story is based on the real life rivalry between old school studio execs Irving Thalberg and Louis B. Mayer. Here’s the book synopsis: 

Generally considered a roman a clef, the story charts the power struggle of self-made, overworked producer Monroe Stahr (modeled on MGM producer Irving Thalberg) with rival executive Pat Brady (a stand-in for MGM head Louis B. Mayer). It is also the story of Stahr’s love affair with young widow Kathleen Moore and is (partly at least) narrated by Cecelia, Brady’s cynical daughter who is hopelessly in love with Stahr. 

Promising “violence, sex and towering ambition of Hollywood in the 30′s” this sounds like something we’d definitely tune in for weekly. But until that happens, here are the ‘Gatsby’ deleted scenes.
