18 Must-See New Movies You Can Still Watch This Summer Season

The summer movie-going season is going to be different this year, but even with theaters closed, there are many exciting new films heading to the screen (hopefully, one very near you).

It’s an understatement to say that this summer movie season is going to look quite a bit different from the past. For one thing — for the time being, at least — there’s no box office to tally or multiplex to visit, as nationwide shutdowns extend from weeks into months and most theaters show little sign of reopening soon. While some big budget summer tentpoles — including Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” Niki Caro’s “Mulan,” and Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” — have opted to hold on to their summer release dates (until, at least, no other option exists), most of the season’s other surefire winners have decamped for seemingly safer dates later in the year.

Mere months ago, the summer of 2020 was going to play home to a wide variety of splashy studio offerings, from a new Marvel movie to the first “A Quiet Place” sequel, the ninth “Fast and Furious” film to a fresh Pixar treat, and many more. Those are all gone now, either set for later in the year or even moved all the way to 2021. For now, the summer movie season as we know it, as we’ve known it, is gone.

But it’s not over. Typically, the stacked summer season provides enough films to round out enough preview pieces to keep cinephiles’ schedules crammed for weeks on end, but while this summer might be different, there are still plenty of new films to see (all from the comfort of your own home, of course). That includes festival hits, new offerings from master filmmakers, and even first-time efforts from new creators, all available on VOD, streaming services, and the newly robust world of virtual cinema.

And, yes, there are still a handful of films holding tight to theatrical dates, but with the current shutdown in a state of flux, it seemed unwise to offer those up as viable options for the movie-loving masses (though we’d love to be proven wrong). Ahead, 19 brand new films available (and recommended!) for a very different summer movie season.
