Image Credit: IFC Films Much of the buzz around Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Women” before its Sundance premiere was the acting trifecta of Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern, but the only name critics couldn’t stop raving about after its debut was Lily Gladstone.
The Native American actress breaks out in a big way in the third part of Reichardt’s drama as a lonely ranch hand who befriends a young law teacher (Stewart). Gladstone has such a warm tenderness about her that you can’t help but root for the character, and the gradual feelings she develops towards Stewart are charted with a natural precision that is deeply effecting. By the time she’s rejected and Reichardt holds the camera on her broken face during a long drive back home, Gladstone breaks your heart into pieces, giving “Certain Women” the silent emotional fireworks it’s been building to for its entire runtime. – Zack Sharf
