David Fincher’s handwritten note detailing his 26 favorite films of all time has circulated the internet for some time, but only recently have these movies been made available to stream thanks to the rise of platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, CBS All Access, Peacock, Shudder, Kanopy, Criterion Channel, and more. With Fincher returning to the movies with “Mank,” his first feature directorial effort since 2014’s “Gone Girl,” now is the perfect time for an up-to-date streaming guide to the auteur’s favorite movies.

“Mank” tells the story of Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and how his personal and professional relationships fueled his Oscar-winning screenplay for Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane.” With this passion project for Fincher and his late father Jack, who gets sole script credit, it’s no surprise “Citizen Kane” is among the 26 films listed as Fincher’s favorite movies. “Kane” is streaming on HBO Max, but “Mank” will launch December 4 on Netflix after a limited theatrical rollout that started November 13.

“It’s not particularly a smart business plan to make a love letter to another movie that’s on [rival streaming service] HBO Max,” Fincher recently said in an interview. “But, listen, if we only did the stuff that was smart, there’d probably only be Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Jurassic Park’ movies.”
