The “Star Wars” galaxy is expanding not so far, far away!
Who knew that when George Lucas introduced audiences to Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo, it would spur a multi-billion dollar empire? The changing exhibition landscape and underperformance of “Solo” led to Disney halting a steady flow of more “Star Wars” theatrical blockbusters, with the studio opting instead for a television streaming push on platform Disney+. (The only upcoming announced and titled “Star Wars” film is Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue Squadron,” which could possibly release in late 2023.)
“I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing,” then-CEO and chairman of The Walt Disney Co. Bob Iger told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018.
So the decades-spanning franchise is venturing out with a slew of new series in the works, from more “Mandalorian” to Ewan McGregor returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi. After the shocking “The Book of Bobba Fett” finale that (spoilers) set up “The Mandalorian” Season 3, it’s clear the “Star Wars” prequel universe is building towards an epic mash-up.
Until then, we also look to McGregor reprising his Obi-Wan role 17 years after portraying the younger version of Alec Guinness’ legendary Jedi Master. And the Disney+ series “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi” will mark Hayden Christensen back as Obi-Wan’s protege, Anakin Skywalker. The series will premiere exclusively on Disney+ May 25.
But shows have been teased called “Andor,” “The Acolyte,” “Rangers of the New Republic,” and more. We’re here to help you make sense of all of them.
Check out all the upcoming “Star Wars” Disney+ series in the works, below.

“The Mandalorian” Season 3
Image Credit: Disney+/Courtesy Everett Collection Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” is set to debut March 1 on Disney+. The latest iteration takes place after the events of “The Book of Boba Fett,” where Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) was last seen re-teaming with Grogu. Meanwhile, Mando is heading back to the planet of Mandalore, where he’s set to face off against warriors.

“Andor”
Image Credit: LucasFilms Diego Luna is set to reprise his role as rebel spy Cassian Andor in Disney+ series “Andor,” created by Tony Gilroy. “Andor” will take place five years before the events of “Rogue One” during the earlier days of the Rebellion. The series is set for a September 21 release on the streaming platform. Genevieve O’Reilly has been confirmed to return as Mon Mothma, and Stellan Skarsgård, Forest Whitaker, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller will co-star.
Showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed to Variety that the series will be about “real people,” a first for the “Star Wars” franchise.
“They’ve made all this IP about the royal family, in essence. It’s been great. But there’s a billion, billion, billion other beings in the galaxy,” Gilroy explained. “There’s plumbers and cosmeticians. Journalists! What are their lives like? The revolution is affecting them just as much as anybody else. Why not use the ‘Star Wars’ canon as a host organism for absolutely realistic, passionate, dramatic storytelling?”
The series will “never fan service” either, and instead focus on “incredibly grown up, gritty, messy” tales within a galaxy far, far away.

“Ahsoka”
Rosario Dawson inaugurated the live action version of the Togruta ex-Jedi on “The Mandalorian,” to such success she’s getting her own show. Dave Filoni will executive produce the series alongside showrunner Jon Favreau.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ivanna Sakhno, Eman Esfandi, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo also star. Hayden Christensen is reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker for an “Obi-Wan” crossover, and Ray Stevenson is slated to play a mysterious villian admiral.
Ahsoka is best known for appearing in the various episodes of the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels” animated series, where she was voiced by Ashley Eckstein. Dawson became attached to the project via social media: “Someone tweeted me and fan cast me,” Dawson said. “I retweeted back and I was like, ‘Absolutely, yes please’ and ‘#AhsokaLives.’ And apparently that got the attention of someone who has been doing the ‘Star Wars’ press for years. She forwarded it to Dave Filoni. That kind of started a whole thing. I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, did I just get fan cast in something?’”
Her first appearance on “The Mandalorian” suggested that she might pick up one of the loose threads of “Rebels”: her hunt for the Empire’s Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the Star Wars Expanded Universe’s fan-favorite villains, dating back to Timothy Zahn’s novel “Heir to the Empire” in 1991.

“The Mandalorian”

Following the surprise after credits scene during “The Book of Boba Fett” finale, fans are geared up and ready to see Pedro Pascal back in action (and costume) as our favorite bounty hunter. The third installment began filming in October 2021 and will debut in February 2023.

“Skeleton Crew”
Image Credit: Lucasfilm Jude Law is set to lead Jon Watts’ first foray into the “Star Wars” canon. The “Spider-Man: No Way Home” director is creating and executive producing a series that follows the fall of the Empire through the eyes of four children, aged 11 to 12 years old. The series, previously codenamed as “Grammar Rodeo,” is described as a “galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.” Law’s role is not yet announced. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” screenwriter Chris Ford penned the Disney+ series.

“The Acolyte”
Image Credit: Disney “Russian Doll” creator Leslye Headland helms “The Acolyte,” described as “a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” Amandla Stenberg is confirmed to appear in the lead role.
“Next stop: a galaxy far, far away….” Stenberg captioned on Instagram at 2022 San Diego Comic Con. “I am so excited to finally announce I’m joining Star Wars: #TheAcolyte! Honored is an understatement. May the Force be with you.”
Jodie Turner-Smith, who recently starred in Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” and “Squid Game” Emmy nominee Lee Jung-Jae joined the cast. “Nine Perfect Strangers,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” and “The Good Place” alum Manny Jacinto was also cast alongside “Russian Doll” star Charlie Barnett.
“The Matrix” icon Carrie-Anne Moss and “Squid Game” Emmy winner Lee Jung-jae officially joined the cast in November 2022.
“The Acolyte” will take place in the final days of the High Republic era of the “Star Wars” timeline, centering on a Sith who begins training under an experienced Sith Lord.
-
“Rangers of the New Republic”
The new series will follow a group of X-wing pilots during the same timeline as “The Mandalorian.” Reportedly, “Rangers of the New Republic” will connect other Disney+ shows like “Ahsoka” and tie in a complete “Star Wars” TV universe, building to an epic crossover event.
-
“Lando”
Image Credit: Lucasfilm Ltd. While Donald Glover portrayed the younger version of Lando Calrissian (originated by Billy Dee Williams) in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” it’s unclear yet whether the “Atlanta” star will reprise the role in the Disney+ standalone series. “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien will develop “Star Wars: Lando.”
-
“A Droid Story”
Animated feature “A Droid Story” will combine original “Star Wars” animation with new visual effects from Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic division. The film will premiere on Disney+, and introduce a “new hero guided by the iconic duo of R2-D2 and C-3PO on a mission known only to them,” per a Disney press statement.
