In the Season 2 premiere of “Atlanta,” Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) tells a story about a mythical figure named “Florida Man.” Per Darius’ understanding, Florida Man is like an “alt-right Johnny Appleseed” who’s “responsible for a large number of abnormal incidents that occur in Florida.”
“No one knows his true identity, date of birth, or what he looks like,” Darius says. “That’s why headliens always just say, ‘Florida Man.'”
Clearly, Darius is under the impression that instead of many different Florida men committing an array of crazy crimes, only one man is behind them all. It’s an excellent joke unto itself, but one motivated by truth: IndieWire searched for “florida man” first via Google New search, and then via Shutterstock — a hub for photos from around the world — and the results are right in line with Darius’ outlandish examples.
The following images — complete with headlines gleaned from the reported facts (or the author’s imagination) — represent what came up when we searched for “Florida Man.” See if you can tell the fact from the fiction (read the captions for details), but it’s important to note these are only from the first page of search results. There are so many more stories of “Florida Man,” these are just the most recent.
Let the legend grow, and enjoy.
