With Valkyrie confirmed as bisexual, and "The Eternals" rumored to feature a gay superhero, Marvel need not look far for LGBTQ+ superheroes.

Over the weekend, “Thor: Ragnarok” actress Tessa Thompson made history by announcing that her character, Valkyrie, would have a queer relationship in a forthcoming Thor movie. “As new king, she needs to find her queen,” Thompson told fans in Hall H during Marvel’s massive Comic-Con panel. “That will be her first order of business. She has some ideas. Keep you posted.” Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed as much to i09, hedging a bit by adding: “How that impacts the story remains to be seen.” While Feige made no specific promises, the earliest audiences could expect to see a queer Valkyrie would be when she returns in “Thor: Love and Thunder” in 2021.

Valkyrie is bisexual in the comic book source material, a fact Thompson has said informed her portrayal of the character in “Thor: Ragnarok,” even if the film did not address it explicitly. Thompson herself recently came out as being “attracted to men and also to women,” and has been an outspoken proponent of inclusivity in Hollywood for her entire career. It’s unclear how much her activism propelled Marvel/Disney’s recent announcement, but, reading between the lines, it’s safe to assume that Thompson’s lobbying — whether in public or behind closed doors — had at least some influence over the momentous decision.
