Nominated for 10 Academy Awards — an especially impressive feat for a gargantuan sci-fi spectacle about curiously-shaped sand worms — Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” managed to overcome cursed source material, the HBO Max boondoggle, and even a less-than-enthusiastic review on this very IndieWire.com in order to become one of the most critically and commercially successful movies of 2021.

Whatever this particular critic may think about the movie as a whole, there’s no denying the artistic integrity of this adaptation and the incredible craftsmanship that brings it to life, nor the directorial vision that was required to make the spice flow (the Oscars’ insistence that “Dune” simply directed itself is another fine argument to do away with the Best Director category altogether). Thanks to its below-the-line bonafides, Villeneuve’s film will likely be one of the biggest winners of the night come March 27, and cinephiles of all persuasions should be happy to see a major studio get rewarded for what amounts to a major gamble in this day and age.

Join us for a category-by-category look at each of the film’s 10 nominations as we determine just how many Oscars this “Dune” actually deserves to win.
