Martin Scorsese is one of the world’s most renowned film directors, but he also happens to be one of its most impressive cinephiles. When it comes to film preservation efforts, Scorsese remains pretty much unmatched. It feels like the director has devoted as much time to championing film history through his non-profit organization The Film Foundation and educational documentaries such as “A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies” as to his own directorial efforts.

Scorsese is currently gearing up to film his new movie, the Apple-backed “Killers of the Flower Moon,” this summer, which makes it the perfect time to explore the movies that made the director fall in love with cinema in the first place. A definitive list of Martin Scorsese’s favorite movies would be massive, but the 40 titles below are a great place to start. Each entry also includes some words from Scorsese himself that help shine a light on what makes the respective film so remarkable.
