It’s a royal face-off for the ages. In Josie Rourke’s feature film debut, Oscar contenders Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie take center stage as two of history’s most compelling queens. The period drama explores the turbulent life of Ronan’s Mary Stuart, who became Queen of France at age 16 and widowed at 18. Robbie plays Mary’s biggest rival, her cousin Elizabeth I.
Each young Queen is fearful and fascinated by the other, but their loyalty to their countries is threatened when Mary asserts her claim to the English throne. In the film’s first trailer, it is the pair’s relationship — first loving, then terrifying — that is the focus, as the world grapples with having two powerful women calling the shots.
Rourke, who comes from a theatrical background, doesn’t skimp on the stunning shots, and even this first trailer offers a solid peek at what might be one of the year’s most lushly imagined films. Take a look.
Focus Features will open “Mary, Queen of Scots” in the U.S. on December 7.
