It’s that time of the year again: as the summer begins, the questions start about which shows we’ll see returning in the fall. Much is still unknown — especially since there’s bound to be a content gap as shut-downs last year ran rampant due to COVID-19. The possible result? Shows that would have seen their run end could instead get a second life just to fill the calendar. We’ll keep updating this gallery throughout the next few months as shows are given the ax, renewed, or in that weird middle ground of getting shoved to a mid-season premiere date.
Angela Bassett stars in this Los Angeles-based look at the life of 911 operators. The series has seen some truly crazy things, including wiping out the Hollywood sign during a disasterous flood. Fans are into it because it’s been renewed for a Season 5.
This Texas-based spin-off of the Ryan Murphy-produced series “9-1-1” follows a New York firefighter, played by Rob Lowe, dealing with life-and-death situations every day. The show has been renewed for a third season.
“All American” follows a football player from South L.A. recruited to play for Beverly Hills High School. Inspired by actual events, the series premiered to strong reviews in 2018 and has been renewed for a fourth season.
“All Rise” has had quite a year. Despite being the first to do an all Zoom-based episode in the wake of the pandemic, the show will not be returning to CBS. The cancellation comes in the wake of an expose on the series’ showrunner and allegations of racism and verbal abuse against its writers of color.
The Sarah Dunn-created sitcom has ended after its fifth season. “American Housewife” followed Katie Otto (Katy Mixon), a confident, unapologetic wife and mother of three, who is raising her flawed family in the wealthy town of Westport, Connecticut, filled with “perfect” mommies and their “perfect” offspring. Joining Katie in her perfectly imperfect world is her husband, Greg Otto (Diedrich Bader), who supports her in every way possible but with a dash of reality thrown in as they work to raise their three children. Despite her flaws and unconventional ways, Katie ultimately only wants the best for her kids and will fight tooth and nail to instill some good old-fashioned values in them. The series received consistently positive response and saw renewed interest after child star Julia Butters appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
“B Positive” was one of the first series to arrive on CBS in the wake of the coronavirus. Annaleigh Ashford and Thomas Middleditch star as two friends with opposite personalities brought together when one of them needs a new kidney. The show has found an audience and will premiere a second season in the fall.
After the departure of Ruby Rose from the role of Batwoman many wondered who would fill the shoes of Batwoman. Javicia Leslie was that actress and she’s taken the role and expanded it to become the only queer hero of color on TV. After premiering Season 2 in January of this year the series was renewed for Season 3.
One of ABC’s more ambitious new series, David E. Kelley’s “Big Sky” drew in audiences with its mystery, twists, and talented cast. The show has developed an intense following, and while it’s been chastised for its lack of indigenous women, it has been praised for casting a trans performer in a prominent role. IndieWire’s Ben Travers didn’t see the interest in the first two episodes, but the social media fanbase was enough to get the show renewed for a second season.
The Kenya Barris-created series “black-ish” returns for its eighth and final season this fall on ABC. The series follows the Johnsons as they navigate the world of raising children, race, and personal independence. The series, which debuted in 2014, was a gamechanger for ABC, with episodes devoted to racism, police brutality, and language in rap music. The show has spawned two spin-offs. “Grown-ish” premiered in 2017 on Freeform and follows eldest daughter Zoey (Yara Shahidi) going to college. The 2019 spin-off “Mixed-ish” is a prequel focusing on the adolescent life of a young Rainbow Johnson and was canceled by the network this year after two seasons.
“Black Lightning” tells the story of a high school principal and former superhero forced to don the costume once again when a criminal gang takes over the city. Originally developed for the FOX network, The CW premiered the series in 2018 despite physical and sexual misconduct allegations against creator Salim Akil. In 2019 the series was integrated into the network’s string of comic book series. The show announced its fourth season would be its last.
Running since 2013, “The Blacklist” will premiere its ninth season opener in the fall on NBC. James Spader stars as a high-profile criminal who turns himself in to the FBI and works with a profiler to solve crimes. The impact of the coronavirus saw the show’s season finale last year turn to animation to complete its eighth season.
Created and executive produced by Emmy Award winner Emily Spivey and featuring a voice cast of comedy all-stars, including Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jillian Bell, Ike Barinholtz and Kumail Nanjani, animated comedy “Bless the Harts” follows the Harts, a Southern family that is always broke, and forever struggling to make ends meet. They one day hope to achieve the American dream, but they’re already rich — in friends, family and laughter. It was renewed for a second season last fall but is canceled as of this year.
The Reagans, the fictional police family at the center of CBS’ long-running police procedural “Blue Bloods” will return for Season 12 in September as part of the network’s fall lineup.
No surprise that one of the most popular animated shows, next to “The Simpsons,” has been renewed for another season by Fox. “Bob’s Burgers” was one of several foregone conclusions for renewal, alongside the aforementioned “Simpsons” as well as “Family Guy.” All three series anchor the network’s Sunday night “Animation Domination” slate of programming.
“Bob Hearts Abishola” is CBS’ romantic sitcom following a compression socks salesman, played by Billy Gardell, who falls for Nigerian nurse Abishola (Folake Olowofoyeku). The series has garnered positive reviews with series lead Olowofoyeku being vocal about her struggles in Hollywood, including being advised to change her name. The series has been renewed for a third season.
Originally debuting on FOX in 2013, the cop comedy found itself dumped by the network after five seasons. NBC swooped in to save the beloved series in 2018, where it’s been bringing the funny ever since. While it has a coveted slot following up this year’s Olympics (barring Japan’s coronavirus surge doesn’t cancel it) NBC has announced this upcoming season will be its last.
“Bull” tells the story of jury consultant Jason Bull, played by Michael Weatherly. The series has been renewed for a sixth season to air in the fall. The series courted controversy in 2019 when actress Eliza Dushku charged Weatherly with sexually harassing her. CBS President Kelly Kahl said, in response to the allegations: “Michael made a mistake in his comments. He owned that mistake. He was apologetic at the time, and he was remorseful.”
This Canadian legal drama starred “Smallville” star Kristin Kreuk as an attorney who returns to her small Canadian hometown to represent a pharmaceutical company against a group of teen girls. But when she starts to dig into the case she realizes the girls need help. The CW started airing “Burden of Truth” back in 2018 with subsequent seasons airing in the summer. It was announced at the beginning of 2021 that the fourth season would be its last.
An Americanized remake of the British sitcom, “Miranda,” “Call Me Kat” stars Mayim Bialik as the titular owner of a cat cafe. The show premiered midseason this year and in spite of negative reviews has been given a second season.
Kyra Sedgwick played the titular mother of this series who moves to Los Angeles to be closer to her grown children. The series came from “New Adventures of Old Christine” creator Kari Lizer. One of the first shows put out by the network this year, it has since been canceled.
The original “Charmed” ran from 1998 to 2006 on the former WB network and starred Shannon Doherty, Alyssa Milano, and Holly Marie Combs as three sisters who were witches. The reboot debuted in 2018 focused on three Latinx sisters who also discovered they had magical powers. Despite the love for the original series it was hoped that fans would come around to the new series and they eventually did. The series gets a fourth season in the fall.
NBC has cornered Wednesday as the night for their string of Chicago-based dramas, with “Chicago Fire” being the first in a trio of shows aimed at the city. Despite garnering mixed reviews, the series has spun off into looking at the medical and police teams of Chicago. NBC has renewed the show for two more seasons.
The tribute to the Windy City continues with “Chicago Med,” a “Grey’s Anatomy”-esque look at the lives of ER doctors and nurses at a fictional hospital in the city. It’s the last of the Dick Wolf-produced “Chicago” trilogy of shows, and like the rest of the “Chicago” shows is already renewed for two more seasons.
“Chicago P.D.,” like other Dick Wolf-produced series, looks at the lives and professional struggles of a group of Chicago police officers. The series has teamed up several times with the police characters of Wolf’s other popular series “Law and Order: SVU.” “Chicago P.D.” will continue to be part of NBC’s Wednesday lineup of “Chicago” shows and is renewed for — you guessed it — two more seasons.
One of the few new shows to be released during the pandemic, “Clarice” tells the story of FBI agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds), of “Silence of the Lambs” fame after she made her legendary collar. The series had an uphill battle due to its association with such a beloved property. It was a show CBS desperately wanted, even giving the creators carte blanche so they wouldn’t take it to a streaming service. Reviews weren’t exactly positive, with IndieWire’s Ben Travers saying, “As the pilot slogs forward, it becomes clearer and clearer that the most compelling parts of Clarice’s story are being left behind.” The series has been renewed for a Season 2, but it will be exclusive to the Paramount+ streaming service.
“The Conners” follows America’s longest-running sitcom family as they continue to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford. Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. will continue to grapple with parenthood, dating, pregnancy, financial pressures, and aging in working-class America. The series is a continuation of the popular 1987 sitcom “Roseanne,” starring comedienne Roseanne Barr. The show has consistently been the No. 1 comedy for ABC so a fourth season renewal wasn’t surprising.
“Coroner” is a Canadian import to the network following a Toronto coroner investigating suspicious deaths. The CW premiered the series last year and it has been given the go-ahead for Season 4.
Created by Geoff Johns, “DC’s Stargirl” is one of the newer entries into the DC Comics universe over on The CW. Brec Bassinger plays Courtney Whitmore, a high school student who takes on the mantle of the eponymous Stargirl. Reviews for the series has been positive and it will have a third season in the fall.
“Legends of Tomorrow” takes characters from the DC Universe, including those from “The Flash” and “Arrow,” and uses them to create new stories. The show has blended in all manner of different genres, including science-fiction and will debut Season 7 in the fall.
Freshman series “Debris” is still waiting to hear whether it will get a second season from NBC. The series, following two investigators charting possible extraterrestrial activity, debuted in March to intrigued reviews. In her “B-” review of the first two episodes, IndieWire’s Kristen Lopez wrote: “‘Debris’ is still setting things up but what’s been presented is engaging so far. If it can find a happy medium between the worlds established by ‘Fringe’ and ‘The X-Files,’ and enhance the banter between its leads, it could be something really special.”
Based on the Italian novel “I, Diavoli” by Guido Maria Brera, “Devils” was one of the few wholly original series airing on The CW series last fall. Alessandro Borghi plays Massimo Ruggero, the charismatic yet ruthless Head of Trading at NYL, one of the world’s most important investment banks, and his mentor, NYL’s CEO Dominic Morgan is played by Patrick Dempsey. The series received lackluster reviews with IndieWire’s Tambay Obenson said, “‘Devils’ just isn’t quite convincing enough to be the cautionary tale that it seems to want to be, and isn’t emotionally profound enough to play as tragedy.” The series is still on the bubble for renewal.
Created by Amy Poehler, Mike Scully, and Julie Thacker-Scully, “Duncanville,” the series follows the 15-year-old Duncan (voiced by Poehler) as he navigates high school without getting into too much trouble. Despite the loss of the other female-created animated series on the network, “Bless the Harts,” “Duncanville” fared a bit better and has been renewed for a third season. IndieWire’s Ben Travers said, “Take the trip to ‘Duncanville’ if you’re so inclined, just know the town is still growing — hopefully, for the better.”
You might remember “Dynasty” from the 1980s, or at least seen clips of Linda Evans and Joan Collins’ amazing hair and costumes. The reboot premiered on The CW in 2017, eventually getting a full 22-episode order. Despite the lack of critical love the show has thrived and has already been renewed for a fifth season.
Queen Latifah is returning to the small screen for a second season of “The Equalizer,” which has been renewed by CBS. The series is a modern day reboot of the 1980s procedural that originally starred Edward Woodward. In his review of the series pilot, Tambay Obenson wrote: “‘The Equalizer’ is both an attempt at a fresh take on the original and its genre, as well as an indubitably CBS drama.”
“Family Guy” has racked up numerous awards, including an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series — only the second animated series in television history to be honored with such a distinction. Most recently, series creator and lead voice actor Seth MacFarlane won the 2019 Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. Cast member Alex Borstein won the 2018 Emmy Award in the category. MacFarlane also was nominated that year. He won the 2017 and 2016 Emmy Award in the category, and was nominated from 2013 to 2015. “Family Guy” enters Season 20 on FOX in the fall.
Premiering in 2018, “FBI” is a Dick Wolf venture — the creator of “Law and Order” — focused on the lives and cases of the members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The series’ second season saw their final three episodes chopped because of the coronavirus and it’s unclear whether they will make an appearance in the next season. Either way, the show has been renewed.
From “Law and Order” creator Dick Wolf, “FBI: Most Wanted” looks at the Fugitive Task Force and how it tracks down some of the most notorious criminals. Like nearly all of Wolf’s recent series, it will return for Season 3 in the fall.
The first major spin-off of a DC franchise, “The Flash” started in 2014 following the success of Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen on “Arrow.” Since that time the series has been the place to spin-off other series, including “Legends of Tomorrow.” The show’s seventh season premiered in March of this year and was renewed for Season 8 in February.
“For Life” tells the story of the wrongfully convicted Aaron Wallace (Nicholas Pinnock) and his work as a lawyer behind bars who defends the wrongfully incarcerated. The series was loosely based on the life of Isaac Wright, Jr. The series premiered in 2020 and was given a second season, aided by the pandemic impacting its first. Unfortunately, ABC has officially canceled the series.
Premiering in 2013, “The Goldbergs” is set to return for Season 9 this fall on ABC. The 1980s-set series follows the title family as they navigate growing up, loving pop culture, and avoiding their “smother,” played by Wendi McLendon-Covey. Despite mixed reviews, the show has been a ratings grabber. Audiences have related to the family at its center, which has already led to a syndication deal. No doubt this season will be dealing with the recent passing of George Segal, who played Pops. The show spawned the 2018 spin-off “Schooled,” which was canceled after two seasons.
“The Good Doctor” is the story of Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), an autistic surgeon with savant syndrome who moves from Wyoming to San Jose to head up a prestigious medical team. The series enters its fifth season in the fall and no doubt will continue the debate with regards to its portrayal of disability in media. The series has been both praised for presenting Murphy’s autism authentically as well as derided for falling into cliches commonly associated with autistic savants.
Three Chicago moms entering into a life of crime in order to support their children is a premise that’s always been engaging, and “Good Girls” has been great at following where it leads for four seasons. But as with the network’s other female-centric series, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” “Good Girls” is on the bubble with no word at the moment as to whether it’s renewed or canceled.
“The Great North” is making its home among Fox’s animated slate of programming. The series premiered this February following a single father raising four children in Alaska. IndieWire’s Ben Travers called the series a worthy successor to “Bob’s Burgers” in his Season 1 review. It’s no surprise that it’ll see another season.
There’s been no word on if ABC has renewed “Grey’s Anatomy” for an 18th season, but it seems highly likely they will. One of the longest running medical dramas, the series has seen several spin-offs crafted in its wake, including the popular “Station 19,” which is also up for renewal. This year saw the Ellen Pompeo-starring series tackle COVID-19 head on, with Pompeo’s Meredith Grey battling the illness.
“Home Economics” follows three siblings brought together by their individual financial situations. Writer Michael Colton based the show on his own life, co-creating and writing the series with writing partner John Aboud. The freshman show will be getting a second season.
“In the Dark” follows a blind woman named Murphy (Perry Mattfeld) as she navigates crime, her friends, and family. The series premiered in 2018 with Michael Showalter as director and is set to air its third season this June. In February it was announced the show would get a Season 4.
The third time was the charm for Kenan Thompson’s long-gestating NBC sitcom, “Kenan.” Formerly titled “Saving Larry,” “Saving Kenan,” and “The Kenan Show,” the comedy premiered in February. “Kenan” follows a widowed dad (Thompson) who’s juggling a high-profile job as the host of an Atlanta morning show while raising his two girls. It will be seeing a Season 2.
“Kung Fu” is an adaptation of the 1970s series of the same name originally starring David Carradine. Rebooted for the modern age, the series follows Asian-American Nicky Shen as she returns home to San Francisco to avenge the murder of her kung fu master. IndieWire’s Tyler Hersko said the series had potential in his review of Season 1. “The show has potential, and with a tighter focus on its characters Nicky’s adventures to defend her community could be worth the investment,” he said. It has already received a Season 2 order.
Tim Allen’s return to the sitcom world with “Last Man Standing” has been a journey. The series originally started on ABC where it ran from 2011-2017. Despite being one of the top-rated show on the network they decided to forego a seventh season. Fox ended up picking up the series in 2018 and announced at the beginning of this year that it’s nine season would be the last.
Like Ted Danson, audiences were losing their minds over news that “Law and Order: SVU” alum, Christopher Meloni, would be returning to NBC and the character of Elliott Stabler. “Law & Order: Organized Crime” follows Stabler as he returns to Manhattan and starts investigating the mob in the city. The show has come under fire for its handling of Stabler’s wife, whose death kicks off the plot. It’s also been questioned how well Stabler works as a cop in the wake of racial tensions in 2020. Either way, “Organized Crime” will be back in the fall.
The second of Dick Wolf’s “Law and Order” series of shows, “Law and Order: SVU” has gone on to be the longest-running U.S. live-action series on television. With “Law and Order: Organized Crime” already renewed for Season 2 it’s no surprise that its predecessor is already greenlit for a new season and is in fact already guaranteed a 24th season. The series will anchor what NBC is dubbing “Law & Order” Thursdays along with “Organized Crime” and the new series, “Law & Order: For the Defense.”
“Legacies” is a spin-off of “The Originals” which is, itself, a spin-off of The CW’s ultra-successful series “The Vampire Diaries.” Premiering in 2018 Danielle Rose Russell leads the cast as the descendent of powerful vampires sent to a school for the gifted where supernatural events happen. In February it was announced the series would get a fourth season.
“Magnum, P.I.” is a modernized remake of the popular 1980s series starring Tom Selleck. The new take, starring Jay Hernandez as private investigator Thomas Magnum, marked the network’s foray into more diverse casting. IndieWire’s Ben Travers took issue with the series’ “corporatized synergistic world — it’s so much more than a reboot, and so much less fun than than the original.” The series has been greenlit for a fourth season.
Sorry, “MacGyver” fans, it looks like you’ll have to find new ways to turn old stuff into explosive devices. The CBS reboot, part of a slate of ’80s-era reboots that included “Magnum, P.I.” and “Hawaii Five-O” has not been renewed for a sixth season. Initially greenlit in 2016, the series garnered a strong fanbase that is already petitioning for the series to be renewed.
Several shows over the years have attempted to recreate the magic and storytelling mystery of “Lost.” One that has held on the longest is “Manifest,” the story of a group of passengers on an airplane who discover they’ve been gone for 5 1/2 years. The premiere was highly rated and reviews have been relatively strong but it doesn’t seem to be enough. The show is currently still on the bubble for a fourth season.
Coming back for a fourth season is the drama series “A Million Little Things.” The series follows a group of friends determined to live life to the fullest after one of their own dies by suicide. The series has been compared to “This is Us” with its heavy use of melodrama. The series has also recently come under fire for its portrayal of disability.
With Kenya Barris’ groundbreaking series “Black-ish” heading into its final season there was hope that the franchise would continue with this look at the young life of Tracee Ellis Ross’ character, Bow (Arica Himmel). Unfortunately, it looks like we’re coming to the end of the rainbow, so to speak, as the series has been canceled after its second season.
Despite winning two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for its leading lady, Allison Janney, as well as multiple nominations for Critics Choice Awards, CBS has canceled “Mom.” The series, created by Chuck Lorre, initially starred Janney as the loudmouth mom to a recovering addict played by Anna Faris. Faris announced her departure from the series last year with the show continuing to follow Janney and her friends.
There’s no word yet on if Fox will be taking a chance on Denis Leary’s new family comedy “The Moodys” quite yet. The series debuted as a limited series Christmas special last December before being greenlit for its own series. Officially, the show, which premiered April 1, is considered the second season. In his initial review of Season 1, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said, “If successful, ‘The Moodys’ keeps enough doors open to allow for a sequel season next year or a spinoff centered on another holiday….Those potential continuations would probably be fine, too, but there’s really no reason to watch the original unless your holiday spirit (or dear ol’ dad) compels you.”
Ted Danson’s “Mr. Mayor” is getting a second term on NBC. The series, following Danson as the bumbling mayor of Los Angeles, fit in well on the network considering it came from “30 Rock” team Robert Carlock and Tina Fey. In his review of the first few episodes, IndieWire’s Ben Travers praised Ted Danson for carrying the series. “Danson can carry just about anything. In his last role on ‘The Good Place,’ he was surrounded by bizarre creative choices and exciting narrative twists; that’s the kind of show Michael Schur & Co. were making, and the actor fit right in. Here, he’s in a more conventional sitcom, but he still takes the universal and makes it specific.”
There have been several attempts to do a TV version of “Nancy Drew.” In 2016, CBS famously passed on a pilot based on the novels because they felt the series was “too female.” The CW seems to have cracked the case, premiering their take on the character in 2019. Reviews have been mixed though IndieWire’s LaToya Ferguson praised the series for being more adult and relatable than “Riverdale.” It will receive a third season in the fall.
It’s mindboggling that “NCIS,” following the investigations from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, has been around for over 15 years. The Mark Harmon-starring series has become the most-watched drama on television and has spawned two spin-off series, though just “NCIS: Los Angeles” is returning in the fall. “NCIS” will premiere season 19 sometime this fall.
“NCIS: Los Angeles” will return in the fall alongside its predecessor, the Mark Harmon-starring “NCIS.” The series — now on Season 13 — follows the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in the City of Angels and stars LL Cool J.
And then there were two, “NCIS” series that is. “NCIS: New Orleans” has been canceled by CBS. The series was originally released back in 2014 as a spin-off to the popular “NCIS” series and was the third in a franchise that also includes “NCIS: Los Angeles” (which, interestingly, has been renewed by the network). The series starred Scott Bakula as the leader of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service for the NOLA area.
CBS has renewed “The Neighborhood” for a fourth season in the fall. The sitcom stars Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield as neighbors navigating race and personal values. IndieWire’s Ben Travers wasn’t too keen on the series, despite the audience love, saying “Creator Jim Reynolds — whose real-life move loosely inspired the series — forces too many one-sided resolutions to look fair for both parties, and shows no indication of knowing how to best utilize his stars.”
Another in NBC’s string of medical series, “New Amsterdam” follows a group of doctors working in one of the country’s oldest public hospitals. As they tackle various medical cases, they also attempt to overhaul the healthcare field from the inside out. Premiering in the fall of 2018, one of their last episodes was initially focused on a pandemic-like event but was postponed by NBC due to the COVID-19 crisis. It’s been renewed for a new season in the fall.
This action-adventure series follows a woman named Talon (Jessica Green), the sole survivor of her race, who travels to the ends of the civilized world to avenge her family. The series originally premiered in 2018 where it was acquired by the CW after being produced by the Syfy network. The show had its third season extended due to the pandemic, but it remains unclear if it will secure a renewal for Season 4.
After its first two episodes FOX picked “Prodigal Son” — which IndieWire’s Ben Travers called “the craziest ‘Silence of the Lambs’ knock-off yet” — up for a back nine, yielding a full season order of 22 episodes. The show has enjoyed relatively steady ratings since its September 2019 premiere and recently added Oscar-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones to its cast, but Fox has decided to cancel the series.
It’s hard being a “Rebel” these days. Katey Sagal played the title character of this legal drama inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich. The series was created by three-time Emmy nominee Krista Vernoff, a showrunner of “Grey’s Anatomy” and writer on “Shameless.” The series premiered in April and has already been canceled by ABC.
Taking a cue from the other networks, Fox’s medical series “The Resident” focuses on the lives and members of a local hospital as they navigate the bureaucratic world that often stands between them and the patients. The series premiered in 2017 and has been renewed for Season 5 in the fall.
No surprise, one of the network’s most successful series, “Riverdale,” has been renewed for a sixth season. The show initially premiered in 2017 as an edgier and modern look at the world of Archie comics. In that time the series has done everything from musical numbers, period flashbacks, and parodies of “Uncut Gems.” Last year the show received criticism by one of its actors of sidelining characters of colors, which the showrunners are committed to rectifying.
John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), the oldest rookie in the LAPD, has used his life experience, determination and sense of humor to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior. Nolan is continually put to the test by a host of new challenges, romantic relationships and deadly criminals, as he looks to figure out what kind of cop he ultimately wants to be. The fourth season will air as part of ABC’s fall lineup.
“Roswell, N.M.” is a reboot of the 1999 television “Roswell” that also aired on the CW (formerly the WB network) and is an adaptation on the book series written by Melinda Metz. Jeanine Mason plays Liz, a woman living in the eponymous Roswell who deals with the discovery that her friends are aliens from the infamous crash. The series has been praised for its authenticity with regards to looking at Latinx issues and will premiere Season 4 in the fall.
“SEAL Team” stars David Boreanaz as the leader of the aforementioned military service, going on international missions to take down baddies. The series, started in 2017, will unveil its fifth season in the fall though you’ll be watching it in a different place. CBS announced the series will be transitioning over to the Paramount+ app with its new season.
The longest-running primetime scripted show in television history enters its 33rd season this year. The series has come under fire over the last few years after removing actor Hank Azaria from voicing the role of the Indian character, Apu. Series creator Matt Groening has said there are ambitious plans for the character so maybe we’ll see those come to fruition in the fall.
A spin-off of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Station 19” follows a group of Seattle firefighters as they deal with pressures both professional and personal. “Station 19” was introduced via the doctors at Seattle Grace of “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2018 and has been part of ABC’s slate of dramatic soap operas in various high-pressure locales. “Station 19” has done well for the network and will unveil its fifth season in the fall.
Originally premiering in 2015, Melissa Benoist starred as Supergirl, aka Kara Zor-El. The series developed a devout following since its premiere and premiered Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman. A spin-off series focused on Hoechlin’s character would develop from “Supergirl” and premiered in February. “Supergirl” was renewed for Season 6 this March where it was announced the show would end. The series finale is set to air by the end of May.
It’s no surprise that The CW’s latest DC superhero franchise, “Superman & Lois” has been renewed. The series is focused on Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) as they return to Smallville to raise their two sons. The series was greenlit in 2019 and Season 1 was filmed at the height of the pandemic last year. Season 2 was greenlit back in March with the series airing outside of the CW on Syfy.
In 2015 audiences met the employees of the fictional big box store Cloud 9. Led by America Ferrera, in one of the few leading comedic roles for a Latina in television, “Superstore” received a lot of love from fans. When Ferrera announced she was departing the series in Season 6 many wondered how the show would continue. A spin-off was planned but eventually canceled by NBC. The series aired its final episode in March of this year. IndieWire’s Ben Travers said the series finale illustrated what workplace sitcoms could be.
“S.W.A.T.” is a remake of the 1975 series of the same name that was later adapted to film in 2003. The new series, borrowing the same characters from the original series, stars Shemar Moore as the leader of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit. It has been renewed for a fifth season.
One of NBC’s biggest successes is the family drama “This is Us.” The Dan Fogelman-created drama has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy, with Sterling K. Brown winning the Emmy for Lead Actor in 2016, all while making audiences sob their eyes out and building a world of twists. Though it hasn’t been nominated for anything since 2018, the series has maintained good ratings and a devout audience following. But, alas, all good things must come to an end and the show has announced their sixth season will be its last.
One of the only U.S. shows featuring a Muslim character in a leading role, “Transplant” is a medical drama focused on Dr. Bashir Hamed and his attempts to do his job as a doctor despite personal issues and societal prejudices. The series was recently honored by the Muslim Public Affairs Council with an impact award and NBC has renewed it for a new season in the fall.
This Canadian import based on Eden Robinson’s book “Son of a Trickster,” the series followed Indigenous teen Jared (Joel Oulette) who starts to notice magical events happening around him. The series received positive reviews, especially considering its focus on Indigenous teens, but after accusations arose with regards to director Michelle Latimer’s Indigenous status the series was canceled.
The CW’s horror anthology series “Two Sentence Horror Stories” has been renewed. The series thrived during the pandemic, creating stories with a lean number of cast and crew that played on the fears audiences were currently going through. A key element of Season 2’s success was working in Canada, where a majority of The CW’s series are filmed.
Despite receiving a full season order last year the clock has struck for “The Unicorn.” The series will not be going forward with a new season. In his review of the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers praised “The Unicorn” for its supporting cast, “ready to inject every single scene with an extra dose of laughs.” The series followed Walter Goggins as a divorcee attempting to get back into dating.
“United States of Al” stars Adhir Kalyan and Parker Young in a comedy about the friendship between Riley (Young), a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (“Al”) (Kalyan), the interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America. Despite critiques with regards to its exploration of cultural tropes and having an Indian actor play an Afghan character the series found enough success to be renewed for Season 2.
The reboot of the Chuck Norris series “Walker, Texas Ranger” looks to be getting a second season. The reboot, shortened to just “Walker,” follows the Texas Ranger (played by “Supernatural” star Jared Padalecki) as he returns to his home after the death of his wife. “Walker, Texas Ranger” ran from 1993-2001 on CBS. The new series was Padalecki’s continuation of his relationship with The CW after the conclusion of their biggest hit, “Supernatural.”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has dominated nearly all facets of media, so it was no surprise when plans were put in the works for a sitcom looking at his life and upbringing. “Young Rock” follows three incarnations of Johnson, from a child, to a teen, to a young man in college. Along the way he tells stories about his father and the wrestling heroes he knew. IndieWire’s Ben Travers said, “It’s impossible to tell just how well “Young Rock” will come together overall, but there’s enough promise to keep checking in” in his review of Season 1. That promise should be delivered as the series has been renewed.
It’s no surprise that CBS has renewed the “Big Bang Theory” spin-off for a new season. In fact, “Young Sheldon” has already been renewed for a fifth, sixth, and seventh season. The show, following the life of a young Sheldon Cooper (played by Iain Armitage) has become a huge success for the network. IndieWire’s Ben Travers has even gone so far as to say this series is funnier than its predecessor. A newer NBC series that fans have taken to heart, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” has filled the void for musical fans with its plotline involving the title character (played by Jane Levy) who sees those around her randomly break out into song. Premiering at the beginning of 2020, the first season saw strong ratings that have petered out over the course of Season 2. That might explain why the show is on the bubble for a third season with no word yet on whether NBC will give it another chance.
