“WandaVision” Is an Unusual Show Starring an Unusual Couple

“Unusual” is the name of the game when it comes to Disney+’s first Marvel Cinematic Universe show. The streaming service featured a handful of new clips in a What If…? that leave viewers with far more questions than answers. There are shots of Wanda and Vision being interviewed in their idealized subaban home and frolicking around a town after being married, as well as a scene of a sinister figure in a beekeeper outfit crawls out of a sewer grate. So, there’s that.

It’s impossible to predict how Wanda and Vision have reunited, but the new teaser is any indication, the answer is bound to be plenty surreal.

“WandaVision” Will Run for Nine Episodes

Disney announced on January 4 that “WandaVision” will boast nine episodes, which will make the title one of the longer-running superhero shows on Disney+. The company previously stated that shows such as “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “Loki” would run for six episodes. The animated “What If…?,” which is essentially an alt-history take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is expected to run for 10 episodes.

The “Frozen” Songwriters Created Several Songs for “WandaVision”

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the husband-wife team who created the hit songs for Disney’s “Frozen,” penned unique songs for several “WandaVision” episodes.

“We loved the bright feeling of American sitcoms mixed with the deep sense of unease the story had, and it was a really inviting challenge to help set that tone,” Kristen said in a statement regarding the “WandaVision” soundtrack.

“WandaVision” is the Franchise’s Take on Classic Sitcoms

“WandaVision” head writer Jac Schaeffer has referred to the series as “a love letter to the golden age of television.” The show emulates the look and feel of classic 1950s sitcoms, such as being filmed in black and white in front of a live studio audience. Crew members also used period lenses and lighting to capture the vintage look of classic television. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige even consulted with the legendary Dick Van Dyke while working on the series.

Wanda “Scarlet Witch” Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen)

Elizabeth Olsen is back as Wanda, one of the MCU’s most powerful characters. Much of Wanda’s MCU arc has revolved around her getting a firmer grip on her immense powers while developing a romantic relationship with Vision. Wanda was killed and subsequently revived in the last two “Avengers” films, and though it’s unclear how she reunites with Vision, her array of superpowers should provide plenty of fodder for fan theories.

Vision (Paul Bettany)

Vision lost his Infinity Stone and life in “Avengers: Infinity War,” and was one of the few protagonists to not be revived in “Avengers: Endgame.” He’s clearly alive and (persumably) well in “WandaVision” but it’s still unknown how he will be resurrected in the show. Though the character is known for his near-invulnurability, and abilities to fly and shoot lasers, he seems to be living a fairly domesticated life in “WandaVision.”

Jimmy Woo (Randall Park)

Randall Park is back as Jimmy Woo, an FBI agent who wanted to hang out with (and arrest, but mostly hang out with) Ant-Man in 2018’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” That’s about all there is to say about his character’s contributions to the franchise thus far, but Park’s move from Marvel film to television gives credence to theories that Disney wants to make its Disney+ MCU shows more connected to the films they are based on. There have been a variety of MCU television shows on platforms such as Netflix, ABC, and Hulu, but MCU characters rarely crossed over between film and television. With Park (among others) back in the mix on Disney+, that strategy seems to be a thing of the past. 

Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings)

Speaking of old MCU characters: Darcy Lewis. Kat Dennings’ MCU character appeared in the first two “Thor” movies and was mostly played off as comic relief. There’s no word on how Darcy will factor into the plot of “WandaVision,” but with her history with Thor she’s no stranger to the franchise’s more surreal elements, making her an understandable fit for the series.

Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris)

Rounding out the miniseries’ film-to-TV crossover characters is Monica Rambeau. Teyonah Parris portrays an older version of the character who first appeared in “Captain Marvel.” The character never met Wanda or Vision in the MCU films and only time will tell how their paths cross in the upcoming series.

A Nosy Neighbor (Kathryn Hahn)

Kathryn Hahn will play a nosy neighbor in “WandaVision.” That is currently the only information available about her character in the upcoming series. Anything is possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Jac Schaeffer (showrunner, writer, and executive producer)

Jac Schaeffer has co-writing credits on “Captain Marvel” and the upcoming “Black Widow.” Now, she’s making her television debut as showrunner, screenwriter, and executive producer of “WandaVision.” Schaeffer has expressed an interest in superhero projects that don’t focus on violence and the surreal aspects of “WandaVision” could be her opportunity to inject new life into Marvel’s time-tested formula.

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez

The married couple and songwriting partners took home their second Best Original Song Oscar with “Remember Me” from “Coco,” and more Oscars could be in their future. The duo are working on music for “Frozen 2” and most recently wrote music for the “Frozen” Broadway musical, which opens in New York City this month.
