Wes Anderson’s long-awaited “The French Dispatch” finally had its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival this month. Anderson gave his cast and crew a 32-film watch list before production started to get his team in the right mindset for the movie, and several of the films included on this list are personal favorites of the Oscar-nominated filmmaker. Want more Anderson favorites? The list below includes over three dozen titles Anderson loves.
Considering Anderson remains one of the most idiosyncratic auteurs working today, it shouldn’t be too surprising to discover his favorite movies run the gamut from American classics to Japanese anime hits to international surrealist masterpieces. Anderson has been vocal over the years about his favorite movies and the films that have inspired his visionary projects, including Akira Kurosawa and Hayao Miyazaki’s influence on his stop-motion project “Isle of Dogs.”
Searchlight Pictures will release “The French Dispatch” in theaters October 22. As fans continue to wait for the new release, they can get a crash course in Anderson’s personal favorites with IndieWire’s guide below.
