Another day, another handful of Sundance acquisitions. Amplify, the all-rights distribution company formed in a merger between Variance Films and GoDigital, will distribute “God Help the Girl” in the U.S.
Directed by Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian, the musical debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition, where it won a Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble. The film will also play in the Generations section at the Berlin Film Festival this weekend and at SXSW in March.
“God Help the Girl” stars Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray as three friends in Glasgow making music together over the course of a summer. In addition to writing and directing, Murdoch provided new songs for the film. The film was produced by Barry Mendel (“Rushmore,” “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,” “Bridesmaids”), and will be released by Amplify in early fall.
