READ MORE: The Films of David O. Russell, Ranked From Worst to Best
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced that BAFTA-winning director, producer and writer David O. Russell will deliver the David Lean Lecture on Saturday, December 19 at BAFTA’s headquarters in Piccadilly, London. Russell is a two-time BAFTA winner and five-time Oscar nominee, making the announcement all the more fitting for this year’s speaker selection.
The lecture that Russell will deliver was first created to honor the legacy of the director David Lean, who was one of the founding members of the British Film Academy in 1947. The lecture is financed by The David Lean Foundation, which often collaborates with BAFTA’s initiatives to support the British filmmaker’s innovation and legacy. Every year, the David Lean Lecture provides audiences a once-in-a-lifetime insider’s perspective of the British film and televisions industries from some of the industry’s most experienced and talented filmmakers.
Robert Altman, Paul Greengrass, David Lynch, Lone Scherfig, Oliver Stone and Peter Weir have all delivered their own lectures over the years.
Dame Pippa Harris, Chair of the BAFTA Film Committee, said of this year‘s speaker choice that Russell “is a passionate and inspirational filmmaker and we are thrilled that he has agreed to deliver this year’s BAFTA David Lean Lecture. Russell’s ability to coax extraordinary performances from his cast is truly exceptional, as is the range, wit, originality and sheer brilliance of the films he makes. We are extremely fortunate to have this chance to benefit from his insights into the industry.”
Public tickets will go on sale at 1PM on Friday, November 27. For more information click here.
Russell’s next film, “Joy,” will hit U.S. theaters on December 25.
