BAMcinématek to Restore Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘A Married Woman’ For Week-Long Run

BAMcinématek has just announced that it will screen a new 2K restoration of Jean-Luc Godard’s “A Married Woman” from the original negative, starting December 4 and lasting through December 10.

“A Married Woman” is an often-overlooked film from Godard’s prolific 1960’s period that tells the story of young love and consumer culture. The film is a study of a young bourgeois housewife (Macha Méril) who divides her time between her aviator husband (Philippe Leroy), who provides her financial security, and her actor lover (Bernard Nöel). The masterful film maintains the fresh youthfulness of Godard’s early work but sees the director at a transitional moment in his nascent filmmaking career, as he moves slowly into abstraction.

The screening is the latest in a series of restorations from BAMcinématek that celebrate the work of Godard, which have included a 2002 tribute to his collaborations with Anna Karina, a 2005 retrospective dedicated to his filmography before and after the 1960s, and a 2007 two-week run of a rare 35mm of “Pierrot le Fou.”
