‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Reboot With Brett Ratner And Eddie Murphy & ‘Top Gun 2’ Back On At Paramount
In 1984, the movie gods gave audiences (among lots of other things): “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Terminator.” Both became massive franchises, and both sorta fizzled out. But since no property in Hollywood is ever truly buried, both are being revived. Earlier today word arrived that “Terminator“—in addition to being rebooted into a new trilogy—is now becoming a TV series too, and it looks like Axel Foley will get one more day on the beat as well.
“Beverly Hills Cop“—being described as a reboot, not a sequel as was planned for years—is now moving along at Paramount, with Jerry Bruckheimer bringing the project in as part of his new deal after he parted with Disney earlier this year. Eddie Murphy will be back and Brett Ratner is attached to direct the project, with the current plan for him to take it on once he’s done with next summer’s “Hercules.”
Ratner has long been attached to a new “Beverly Hills Cop” but has never been able to get it off the ground, teaming with Murphy instead for the slight comedy romp “Tower Heist.” And around that time both Ratner and Murphy said the prospect of a new “Beverly Hills Cop” movie was dead—never say never. The new movie will apparently find Foley “returning to his Detroit roots,” and while Deadline says the “script is still being worked on,” we wonder if Ratner will get to make the “hard R” movie he promised oh so long ago. “It’s a reinvention,” the director said in 2009. “I’m going to reintroduce it to a contemporary audience. I’m going to take the best of the first two films and put it into the new one.” Okay, then.
Meanwhile, “Top Gun 2” is getting back on the runway as well. And while there’s no other real updates—and considering Tom Cruise is booked with “Mission: Impossible 5” for the foreseeable future—it’s not clear if it’s any closer to actually happening. But it at least does indicate that following the passing of Tony Scott, everyone around the project is ready to try and give it another go.
