Both in just 4 theaters, Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance “Carol” and Tom Hooper’s transgender biopic “The Danish Girl” had the two best per-theater-averages of any films in release this Thanksgiving weekend.

The former — in its second weekend — dropped just 20% as it grossed another $203,076 for a whopping $50,769 per theater. “Carol” has now grossed $588,325 and is set to make a whole lot more as it starts expanding next weekend (by which time it may have won a few major critics awards).

“The Danish Girl,” meanwhile, opened this weekend to the tune of $185,000 — or $46,250 per its 4 theaters. It also has high hopes for awards season boosts, though the film is not the critical darling “Carol” is. Either way, both films have a lot of promising as we head into the final month of the year.
