‘Citizen Kane’ 75th Anniversary: Watch This Great Supercut of Some of the Film Scenes It Inspired
“Citizen Kane” is one of those movies everyone knows even if they’ve never watched it, sometimes in a way that prevents prospective viewers from finally seeing what all the fuss is about — how could anything possibly live up to the hype? Suffice to say that Orson Welles’ landmark film, which is even more miraculous for being the writer/director/producer/star’s first, is worthy of its status as the consensus choice for Greatest Movie Ever Made (even if “Vertigo” dethroned it as such on the most recent Sight & Sound poll). Many, many filmmakers would agree, as a new supercut of scenes inspired by “Citizen Kane” put together by Slate shows.

Among the movies featured in the 90-second video are Tim Burton’s “Batman,” Wes Craven’s “New Nightmare,” Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner,” the Coen Brothers’ “The Man Who Wasn’t There” and “The Hudsucker Proxy, Woody Allen’s “Zelig,” Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” and even a Madonna video directed by David Fincher.

The video was made to celebrate the anniversary of “Citizen Kane,” which first opened at RKO Palace Theatre in New York City 75 years ago this week. (PSA: If you’re in the mood to either revisit or finally discover Welles’ oeuvre, don’t sleep on “The Magnificent Ambersons.”)
