Organizers of the 2nd Annual Tribeca Film Festival have chosen a Hollywood studio film to open the 2003 event. “Down With Love” from Twentieth Century Fox, starring Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger, will kick-off the Tribeca Film Festival on May 6 in lower Manhattan.

The film, set in New York City in the ’60s, is an homage to Rock Hudson and Doris Day comedies. Directed by Peyton Reed (“Bring It On”) and produced by Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks (“American Beauty”), it utilizes a “super-saturated” color palette to evoke the Technicolor look of the era. McGregor stars as a Manhattan ladies man who catches the attention of a feminist New York advice author. The film also features David Hyde Pierce, Sarah Paulson, and Tony Randall.

“‘Down With Love’ is the perfect film to kick off our premieres at the festival this year,” said festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal in a prepared statement. “Everybody needs a good laugh now, and we are honored to have Renee Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, and the rest of the cast and filmmakers join us.”

Trade reports are touting the fact that the film, set to open on May 16 nationwide, will be going up against the sequel to “The Matrix” in its opening weekend.

The Tribeca Film Festival is set to run from May 6-11, offering about 200 films in various categories and sections. The festival will announce its full line-up later.
