Eli Roth Aims to Make Horror Thriller ‘The Green Inferno’ His ‘Scariest and Most Intense Film’
Eli Roth will get back in the directing chair for the first time since his 2007 sequel “Hostel: Part II” with the horror thriller “The Green Inferno,” courtesy of production-financing outfit Worldview Entertainment. Filming is scheduled to begin in Peru and Chile in the fall.
Roth, who wrote the screenplay with Guillermo Amoedo (“Aftershock”), will produce with Worldview execs Christopher Woodrow and Molly Conners, and Sobras International producers Miguel Asensio Llamas and Nicolás Lopez. Worldview’s Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson Redlich and Hoyt David Morgan will be executive producers.
While “Inferno’s” storyline remains a mystery, Roth recently produced, starred in and co-wrote the forthcoming earthquake thriller “Aftershock,” which was shot in Chile and inspired Roth’s desire to make the new film. Exclusive Media is selling rights to “Inferno” internationally at the Cannes market, while CAA is handling Stateside sales.
“Eli has an excellent track record of writing and directing high quality, commercially successful films of this genre,” said Woodrow, Worldview’s CEO. “We are big fans of his work and very excited to be a part of his next project.”
The New York-based Worldview also is producing Guillaume Canet’s crime thriller “Blood Ties,” James Gray’s untitled period drama and Atom Egoyan’s adaptation of “Devil’s Knot.” The company has “Killer Joe” hitting theaters in July through LD Distribution and the British crime thriller “Welcome to the Punch” opening later this year.
Roth recently produced and co-wrote “The Man with the Iron Fists” for Universal and produced “The Last Exorcism Part II” with Strike Entertainment for StudioCanal. He is currently filming his new Netflix series “Hemlock Grove.”
“I’ve had an amazing few years producing, writing and acting, and am very excited to get back in the director’s chair,” Roth said. “I’ve been working on this idea for several years, and was inspired by filming in Chile and cannot wait to get back. Worldview backs my vision and believes in me, and is giving me the support I need and the freedom to take risks and make something daring and terrifying. I believe this will be the scariest and most intense film I have made to date.”
