Frankly, this isn’t the sort of thing that would usually merit a post, but when the subject is Rex Reed, Criticwire finds it hard to resist. It seems Fiona Apple, who recently took issue with an audience member yelling out unsolicited diet tips in the middle of her set, took a detour during her between-song banter to lob some rather pointed words Reed’s way. Apparently Reed once spelled the name of Apple’s father, actor Brandon Maggart, incorrectly in a review, and furthermore “fucked with people and how they looked” (which certainly fits with Reed’s recent M.O.). “I’ve wanted to do this a long time,” she said to the crowd. “Daddy, this is for you: Rex Reed, you’re a cunt.”
The Hollywood Reporter went on to explain that this “wasn’t quite the tirade it will likely be made out to be (as a cursory Google reveals it has), and searching for Reed’s reviews of Maggart’s brief filmography yields few results; evidently his opinion of Christmas Evil has been lost to the ages. But it turns out Brandon isn’t the only Maggart Reed’s had harsh words for: In his review of a cabaret show by Maude Maggart, Apple’s younger sister, he calls her “a yawn” and “too twee to tweet.” Sorry, Rex Reed, but as any law student will tell you, you only get one bite at the apple.
