Following his 2014 breakthrough film “Mommy” — yes, even bigger than the various career breakthrough films he’s made — French Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan was all set to make his first English-Language effort with big Hollywood names. Jessica Chastain and “Game Of Thrones” star Kit Harington were to front “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.”
But apparently Dolan was secretly concocting multiple plans. Suddenly, and out of nowhere, he announced a new project that was coming first and was fully cast: “It’s Only The End Of The World” starring Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, Vincent Cassel, and more.
Production began at the end of May, just after Dolan was finished with his duties on the Cannes Film Festival jury, and the first image from the production has arrived. Presumably, this means we’re going to have a new Dolan film ready for 2016, perhaps even for Cannes, but at any rate, the first pic of Marion Cotillard is below.
Inspired by Jean-Luc Lagarce‘s play, “It’s Only The End Of The World” focuses on a writer who returns home after a twelve-year absence to announce his impending death, and the reunion with his family that follows. We can’t wait to see more from this one.
Bonus: Here’s a 1 hour FSLC/The Close Up conversation with Xavier Dolan
