Frameline Announces 2014 Festival Winners, From 'Something Must Break' To 'Kumu Hina'
Frameline — the world’s largest and longest-running festival celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer films and filmmakers — has concluded its 38th edition this past weekend, and announced its awards in the process.

On June 29, Frameline38 announced its two juried awards for Wells Fargo Outstanding First Feature and Achievement in Documentary, plus two honorable mentions. The Frameline38 Wells Fargo Outstanding First Feature Award went to Ester Martin Bergsmark’s film SOMETHING MUST BREAK, which featured a powerful performance by Saga Becker. Honorable mention went to the Centerpiece Narrative Hong Khaou’s LILTING, a moving exploration of loss, love, memory, and cross cultural barriers through the power of language.
Taking home the Frameline38 Jury Award for Achievement in Documentary was Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson’s KUMU HINA, a compassionate and inspiring portrait of Hinaleimoana Wong Kalu, a native Hawaiian mahu (transgender person) and a respected kumu (teacher) and community leader. The documentary REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG by filmmaker Nancy Kates received an honorable mention for its revelatory biography of the 20th century thinker and feminist Susan Sontag.
Jury members for Outstanding First Feature were Travis Matthews, filmmaker; Ingrid Eggers, founder of the Berlin & Beyond Festival; and Fabricio Martinez from the El Lugar Sin Limites Film Festival in Quito, Ecuador. Jury members for Achievement in Documentary included Michael Ehrenzweig, co-producer of The Celluloid Closet and Paragraph 175 and co-founder of the International Film Financing Conference; Anita Monga, Artistic Director of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival; and Jewelle Gomez, noted author, activist, and cinephile.
Frameline38 AT&T Audience Awards went to the Festival’s most crowd-pleasing hits. Daniel Ribeiro’s short-turned-feature film about teenage love, THE WAY HE LOOKS received the Frameline38 AT&T Audience Award for Best Feature. Directors Sheila Canavan and Michael Chandler were awarded the Frameline38 AT&T Audience Award for Best Documentary for COMPARED TO WHAT: THE IMPROBABLE JOURNEY OF BARNEY FRANK, which focuses on the country’s most prominent out gay politician to date. The Frameline38 AT&T Audience Award for Best Short went to Cheryl Dunye’s BLACK IS BLUE, a look at a black trans male security guard’s struggle with his identity.
