Hans Zimmer Will Score Christopher Nolan’s WWII Film ‘Dunkirk’
Hans Zimmer has been Christopher Nolan‘s go to guy for film scores starting with “Batman Begins” (which he co-scored with James Newton Howard (while he served as Executive Music Producer on “The Prestige“). So perhaps this isn’t the most surprising news in the world, but then again, the WWII movie “Dunkirk” offers a pretty big change of pace for the filmmaker, and it’s just as conceivable he could’ve chosen to go in another direction.
But he didn’t, and according to Hans-Zimmer.com, who have the word from the composer himself, Zimmer will reteam with Nolan to score “Dunkirk.” In fact, he’s already started working on the music, even though production doesn’t start until the spring. So what kind of Zimmer will we get? The organ-happy artist who powered up “Interstellar,” the braaaahm-tacular composer of “Inception,” or will he go into a different mode altogether? I would assume the latter, unless Nolan is really going to deliver a bombastic WWII movie, though one hopes the material will see him move into a different register as a filmmaker.
Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance co-star, while unknown actors take the lead ensemble roles, in the film that’s said to be inspired by Operation Dynamo, the near-miraculous evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied troops from the French seaport of Dunkirk, which took place from May-June of 1940.
