Five years passed between his first and second film, but now James Ponsoldt appears to be working at a prolific pace. His third film, “The Spectacular Now,” premiered at Sundance this January, which is exactly one year after his sophomore film “Smashed” made its debut in Park City. In January, he signed on to write and direct “Pure,” an adaptation of the young adult novel written by Julianna Baggot. And it looks like he’ll be adding two more projects to his plate, in a partnership with The Weinstein Company.

Ponsoldt has signed on to adapt the musical “Pippin,” which has recently been revived on Broadway with preview performances currently being shown. The musical centers on the title character Pippin, son of King Charlemagne, who longs to find passion and adventure in his life. He attempts to prove loyalty to his father by going to war, but eventually winds up killing his father in order to take over the throne. It’ll be interesting to see what direction Ponsoldt decides to take with the material.

For the second project, James Ponsoldt is slated to adapt and direct an upcoming novel from Matthew Quick, the author of “Silver Linings Playbook.” The new novel’s entitled “Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock,” and tells the story of a young man who harbors plans to kill his former best friend and then himself. Before doing so, he plans to say goodbye to the four people who mean the most to him. Sounds like much darker material than “Silver Linings Playbook,” but Ponsoldt has already shown a knack for delving into darker territory with both humor and heart.

Either way, Ponsoldt will certainly have his hands full in the next year or so. “The Spectacular Now,” in the meantime, is set to be released in theaters on August 2nd. [Deadline]
